In 2011 the entrenched providers had written off our neighborhood. We stopped waiting and built the network they would not. Fifteen years later it spans Metro New York.

How it started

We were working out of Red Hook, watching the entrenched providers charge more every year and deliver less. We knew what good infrastructure looked like. The neighborhood had none, and nobody was coming to build it.

So we built it ourselves, starting with the iconic Red Hook Waterfront. The first customers were the shops, studios and warehouses that make the place what it is. Word travelled the way it does here, one block at a time. Those blocks added up. The same network now carries thousand unit apartment towers, sprawling industrial campuses, the Brooklyn and Manhattan cruise terminals, and skyscrapers across the river. We engineered it to scale, and we are nowhere near finished.

The night the lights went out

In October 2012, Hurricane Sandy put the waterfront under water and took the power with it. Landlines were gone. Cell service was gone. The entrenched carriers took catastrophic losses and stayed dark for weeks.

Brooklyn Fiber stayed up. We ran the network off car batteries, put hotspots where people could reach their families, and kept the neighborhood online while the utilities worked their way back. No contract required any of it. We are prouder of that week than anything since, and it is why a person still answers the phone here.

The network now

That first block is now a network that runs the length of Brooklyn, across the river into Manhattan, out through Queens and into the wider metro area. Thousands of homes and businesses run on it: apartment buildings and industrial campuses, studios and storefronts, a Formula E street circuit and a Sail Grand Prix in the harbor.

We designed it, we built it, and we run it ourselves. Nobody resells us, and we do not resell anyone else. When something needs fixing, the person who picks up is usually the person who put it there.

What has not changed

One flat price that does not move. No contracts, no installation fees, no termination fees. The same speed up as down on every plan, because half a connection is not a connection. And the same answer we gave our first customer in Red Hook: call us, and we will come look at it.
